What We Did In Class Today!

COVID-19 UPDATE: 3/22/20

WCPSS teachers have been asked not to provide or expect students to complete work relating to "core instruction" at this time. Our regular curriculum will be on hold until further notice. With that said, here are some productive ways to stay accountable:

  • Our school district released a website containing resources for supplemental instruction for your children to access while school is closed.  Although we can never replace the value of the teacher-student interaction in the classroom, these supplemental resources and extension activities are designed to help students remain engaged in learning while schools are closed. Here is the LINK!

  • Complete any missing assignments for your classes: We don't know yet how this time will affect the end of the quarter grades, but take care of any work that was already missing so you can maximize the time that we have already spent together this quarter.

  • Free read lots of fun novels! (Wake County Public Libraries has tons of audio and e-books available!)

  • Explore supplementary resources: Here are a few free websites/resources that will provide you with educational opportunities to enrich the skills we've been practicing. I'll add more as I find new interesting materials to share.

    • I am going to continue using my Google Classrooms a LOT, so, for starters, if you are not already in my Google Classroom PLEASE add yourself to your core class!

      • I am going to be doing a read-aloud on my Google Classroom for the kids. The vote came in for the novel "A Night Divided" by Jennifer A. Nielsen, so even if the kids do not want to read themselves, they can listen to me read to them ðŸ™‚

      • I have also been posting some activities for the kids to do as well on my Google Classroom as I have been thinking of/ finding them!

        • Core 1 Code: 3e4p3hr

        • Core 2 Code: 7oeh5yz

        • Core 3 Code: 3h7dus5

        • Core 4 Code: 7hr5v6u

    • EReadingGames: Play a variety of games to test your skills with context clues, poetic devices, grammar, figurative language, and more. Most games are mobile-friendly. No log-in is needed.

    • Scholastic Magazine Articles: 5+ days of high-interest paired articles and thought-provoking questions and scenarios. No log-in is needed.

    • FreeRice.com: A vocabulary quiz game that donates to the World Food Programme for each correct answer. There are English vocabulary and English grammar questions to practice. No log-in is needed, but creating an account to track your own progress is optional.

    • Project Gutenberg: A website offering 60,000+ free e-books for download - try a classic like "The Wizard of Oz" or "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" with no log-in needed.

    • OverDrive: An app for free e-books and audiobooks loaned through local libraries. You will need to create an account and use your Wake County public library card number.

    • NewsELA: News articles and paired question sets centered around high-interest current events.

    • Amazon Audible: Starting today, kids everywhere can instantly stream an incredible collection of stories, including titles across six different languages, that will help them continue dreaming, learning, and just being kids. All stories are free to stream on your desktop, laptop, phone or tablet. Explore the collection, select a title and start listening (Maybe download "A Night Divided" by Jennifer A. Nielsen, so you can follow along to my read-aloud ðŸ™‚).

    • LightSail: The LightSail Library contains texts for students from grades K-12 written across a wide range of Lexile measures. These texts are embedded with assessments and cover a variety of subject matter. Now all students can discover who they are as readers through a broad and appealing library filled with great texts.

      • My Classroom Code is: 52SXWG

    • BrainPop: has made its resources FREE for all, and I have created a teacher account so all you need to do is log in with my Username and Password, and you have complete access to EVERYTHING on the site. This is more than just ELA, they have things for all content areas.

      • Username: DDMSDolphins

      • Password: dolphins2020

PLEASE stay safe during this time and remember to practice good hygiene and social distancing. Set up new routines to help keep yourself healthy and enrich the learning you have done so far this year. We will get through this, and I look forward to seeing you all again VERY soon, and miss you all TONS! I love you guys!

The kids had to write a claim about if they believed the adversities that people faced during The Middle Ages, still applied today. Then we wrote those on our desks and played musical claim stations. I played music and when it stopped they needed to sit in another persons desk, read their claim, and respond to it. After we did this a few times, they went back to their original claim, and added more information to it. We had so much fun!

Today in class we looked at quotes from our novel "The Lightning Thief" and quotes from "The Hero's Journey" and looked to see how the two separate texts had a relationship with one another. We walked around the room in groups and tried to think about how these quotes tied to one another. Also, saw some great faces at Chipotle that night as well :)

Wednesday: 9/25

Today in class we went over how to properly cite evidence, the importance of using evidence to help us support our claims or opinions when writing, and the format for writing a well written paragraph. We need to ensure that we are properly keeping these things in mind when writing, as this is what our Final Unit Test will be on that is next Wednesday 10/2!

Thursday: 9/26

As a class we reviewed the way to structure our writing when combining two different forms of evidence. We then practiced finding text evidence from Percy Jackson, and from "The Hero's Journey" to see how Percy is following the path of the hero's journey. Our test will be 10/2/19!

Friday: 9/27

In class today, we as a class worked on pages 31 & 33 in the workbook. The students have their unit assessment on Wednesday 10/2, and it is EXTREMELY similar to those two pages in the workbook. If the students have any struggles they should see me on Tuesday so I can help them.

Week Four: 9/16-9/20

Monday: 9/16

Today in class students participated in a quick write, where they had to discuss what makes a hero, who their personal hero is and why. We then came up with a list of characteristics of what makes a hero together. Then, the students worked in their table groups to create a mini poster on what a hero means to them!

Tuesday: 9/17

Today we began to look at "The Hero's Journey" and how it is a reoccurring theme across a lot of different myths, books, and movies throughout history. We watched a quick video, and then took some guided notes together as a class. We tlaked about words that we may not have known, and at the end finished off our hero mini posters from yesterday!

Wednesday: 9/18

In most of our classes today we were able to begin working on an assignment called "Thor's Journey". This is where students were able to watch a video clip and identify how Thor went through the various stages of the "Hero's Journey" that we began learning about yesterday. In the other classes, we unfortunately had to listen to a few chapters of the novel as students are not reading/listening each night parts of the novel are assigned. Please encourage all students to read or listen to the novel! Thank you :)

Thursday: 9/19

In class today we worked on the Hero's Journey  bit more, we went over some of Thor's Journey, and how he was going through all of the different stages. We also took a reading check today on chapters 5 & 6. Again, please encourage all students to read or listen to the book every night. We cannot be successful in class otherwise :)

Friday: 9/20

We had Free Reading Friday again! It had been a few weeks, but it was so nice to have 20 minutes to free choice read and relax in the classroom. Afterward, we began to look at the hero's journey through Moana and how she went through all of the stages of the journey. The kids loved singing along!

Week Three: 9/9-9/13

Monday: 9/9

YAY! We finally had school today! In class today we read the first three pages of Percy Jackson together as a class to look at who he is as a character. We made inferences about who he is based on quotes from those first three pages and completed a carousel activity. The students had to "notice" and "wonder" about Percy Jackson's character, and then we practiced d citing evidence when answering questions about a text. WHEW! A busy fun day!

Tuesday: 9/10

Today in class we learned the difference between direct evidence, and inferring based upon the text that we are reading. We practiced with a couple of examples. Then, we transitioned into using a challenge and response chart based around Percy Jackson and the obstacles that he has faced so far in the novel.

Wednesday: 9/11

Today in class we took a reading check for chapter three in The Lightning Thief. After, we practiced completing our challenge/response/infer charts together, and went over the mid-unit assessment that we are having on Friday!

Thursday: 9/12

We had a fun day today! We played a couple of games of Kahoot to help the students review the information that was discussed in the first four chapters of The Lightning Thief, along with some of the more challenging vocabulary words that are in those chapters as well. We also discussed internal verse external challenges, and how everyone in life goes through an internal challenge that you do not know about!

Friday: 9/13

Today students took their Mid-Unit Assessment. This quiz took up the whole class period, and when they were done they read their books! No homework this weekend! :)

Week Two: 9/2-9/6

Monday: 9/2 LABOR DAY: NO SCHOOL!

Tuesday: 9/3

In class today, we all went to the media center to learn how to login into all of the school's devices and websites from Ms. Morgan. Afterwards, the students participated in an "escape the library" activity put together by Ms. Morgan, where the students needed to work together to complete different tasks to learn all about the library. (Where things are, genres, procedures, policies, etc.)

Wednesday: 9/4

Today in class we had a reading check to see if the students had read the first two chapters of Percy Jackson. After the reading check, we did a snowball activity to show how we are going to have "good" discussions in class, and what that actually means. we also went back and began to look at using text to help support our answers when completing questions/ discussing a topic.

Thursday: 9/5: HURRICANE DORIAN: NO SCHOOL!

Friday: 9/6: HURRICANE DORIAN: NO SCHOOL!

Week One: 8/26-8/30

Monday: 8/26 FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL

Today in class we went over our core values/ classroom expectations by listening to songs that related to them. Also, we completed an all about me page so I could get to know the students better!

Tuesday: 8/27

Today, we completed a scavenger hunt around the school to help students learn where things were, and how to get around :)

Wednesday: 8/28

In class today, students got their workbooks! We read "Shrouded in Myth" on page two. We talked about how to look for the main idea or the gist of a story, and how to identify words that are unfamiliar to us in a text!

Thursday: 8/29

The students were shown this website today, and I walked them through where everything is. Also, in-class students received their copies of the Lightening Thief. They also were then allowed to begin their homework, which was to read chapter one.

Friday: 8/30

YAY! We made it through week one of middle school! To celebrate, we had our very first Free Reading Friday. Students were allowed to read whatever they wanted for the first 15-20 minutes of class. Afterward, we participated in a kindness card activity where the students all had a paper on their backs, and they had to walk around anonymously complimenting one another. This promoted a positive and respectful classroom environment. :)
